Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda is in Moscow for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Prior to their meeting, Putin told reporters that relations between the two countries have been improving over the past few years. He said dialogue was continuing aimed at reaching a peace treaty. Japan and Russia have not signed a peace treaty due to the dispute over several islands of which Soviet forces took control during the last days of World War II. Fukuda said he wanted to give fresh momentum to bilateral relations. Fukuda was also to meet with Russian President-elect Dmitry Medvedev.
