United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the US may consider taking over NATO's command in southern Afghanistan.
Gates said the Pentagon would consult closely with the NATO allies whose combat forces are deployed in the southern region, before altering its military role in the country. Some NATO allies have been reluctant to provide combat forces in southern Afghanistan, which has seen the heaviest Taliban violence. Britain, Canada, the Netherlands and Australia all have forces in the region, which is currently under NATO command.
