Reports from Bolivia say voters in the province of Santa Cruz have approved a proposed statute to give the resource-rich region greater autonomy with an 85 percent majority.
The referendum was called despite protests from the central government. Supporters of leftist President Evo Morales disrupted polling, burning ballot boxes at two constituencies. President Morales described the referendum as illegal and the military warned that it violated the country's territorial integrity. Implementing the statute would require an ammendment to the Bolivia's constitution.
