There are fears that the death toll in Burma from Saturday's cyclone Nargis could continue to rise dramatically.
Burma's government says more than 22,000 people were killed, but the top US diplomat in Burma warned that without speedy action that figure could rise to 100,000. Aid agencies say that hundreds of thousands have been left without food, clean water and shelter and that the risk of a widespread outbreak of disease is increasing by the hour. The international community is increasing the pressure on the Burmese regime to facilitate foreign access to regions devastated by Saturday's cyclone. Speaking to reporters in Washington, US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, called on Burma's junta to remove all obstacles for foreign aid workers. Burma's ruling military junta has approved the passage of some aid, but other offers have been spurned while many foreign aid workers are being held in queue for visas.
