A strong earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, has hit the eastern Chinese province of Sichuan.
Xinhua news agency says four children were killed and more than 100 injured when two primary schools collapsed in a suburb of southwest China's Chongqing municipality. Tremors of the earthquake were felt in the capital Beijing and Shanghai with reports of office buildings swaying as far away as Taiwan and Bangkok.
