It is feared the death toll could rise further amid reports that many houses have collapsed near the epicentre. The earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter scale. Troops have reportedly been ordered to help with the disaster relief work. The quake was felt well over 3,000 km away, even in Thailand's capital Bangkok, where office buildings swayed for several minutes.
