The EU commissioner for humanitarian aid, Louis Michel, says the European Union will hold an emergency meeting on the situation in cyclone-hit Burma on Tuesday.
The meeting of EU development ministers comes amid a deteriorating situation in the Asian country. The UN and aid agencies say the humanitarian crisis is being aggravated by the ruling junta's slow response and reluctance to allow in foreign aid workers. Burmese state television reports that the death toll has risen to 32,000, but international relief agencies believe at least 100,000 people may have died and that up to 1.5 million people are in desperate need of humanitarian aid.
