German Chancellor Angela Merkel has arrived in Brazil during her first state visit to Latin America.
She is to hold talks with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva later on Wednesday. The two leaders are expected to discuss closer ties with the European Union, as well as co-operation in developing renewable energies. Also on the agenda will be an EU-Latin America summit, which is to take place at the end of the week in Peru. Merkel's regional visit comes amid a row with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. The two leaders have accused each other of, among other things, not speaking for their respective regions.
