14.05.2008 - EU sends aid official to Burma

The European Union has sent a top aid official to Burma to urge the military regime there to allow in aid workers and relief supplies to help victims of Cyclone Nargis.

EU development ministers called on Burmese leaders to give international aid experts free access to an estimated 1.5 million survivors. However, they stopped short of asking the world to deliver aid without Burma's consent, despite calls from Germany, France and Britain to act without the regime's approval. The military government has accepted aid from the outside world, but has largely barred foreign teams from helping distribute it.
