Japan has announced that it reached a final agreement with China for a joint natural gas exploration project in the disputed East China Sea.
The Chunxiao gas field lies on a disputed demarcation line. China started drilling in the field five years ago, and according to terms of the deal, China would take profits proportional to the size of investment it has already made. The two governments also agreed on a joint project in an undeveloped area. The agreement could pave the way for further economic cooperation between Asia's two largest economies that are heavily dependent on energy imports.
