Afghan President Hamid Karzai has ordered an investigation into the alleged killing of 16 civilians in an air raid by US-led forces on Friday.
His office said in a statement that Karzai was saddened by the incident in the north-eastern province of Nuristan. The interior ministry said the civilian victims were killed as they were travelling out of the area after being warned of an impending operation against Islamic insurgents. The US-led coalition claimed that the dead were all militants. The seven-year war against the Taliban-led insurgency has seen numerous incidents in which civilians were killed, as well as claims of civilian casualties that proved untrue.
