The United States has signed a missile defence treaty with the Czech Republic.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed the agreement with her Czech counterpart Karel Schwarzenberg in the Czech capital. The treaty allows for the US to build and operate a radar base near Prague as part of a global missile defence system. The United States is also trying to close a deal with Poland to base a number of interceptor rockets as part of the system. Washington says the shield is aimed at potential attacks from countries like Iran. Russia strongly opposes the shield, which it considers a threat.
