European Union lawmakers have agreed to include aviation in the EU's Emission Trading Scheme (ETS) from 2012.
The European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favour of forcing airlines to cut carbon emissions by 3 percent in the first year, and by 5 percent from 2013 onwards. The system will apply to all airlines flying into and out of the 27-nation bloc, including non-European carriers.
