Russia has threatened military action if a US anti-missile shield is set up near its borders, according to a statement on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website.
The announcement came just hours after the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice signed a missile defence deal with the Czech Republic in Prague. The treaty allows the US to build and operate a radar base near Prague as part of a missile defence system.
