14.07.2008 - Bush ends offshore drilling ban

United States President George W.

Bush has ended an executive ban on oil drilling off the US coast. In a statement to the press, Bush urged the Democrat controlled Congress to follow suit and give oil companies permission to drill in the Arctic Wildlife National Refuge. Bush said Congress was out of touch with American people's concerns over high oil prices, which reached a $146 in trading on Monday. Opponents to drilling offshore and in the Arctic reserve say oil wells in these places would not have an impact on supply for up to 10 years, and that such wells would do nothing to change current prices. The executive ban was first issued in 1990 by the first President Bush, and was extended by Bill Clinton.
