Tensions continue to grow between ex-Soviet Georgia and its two rebel regions of South Ossetia and Abkahzia, leading to fears of full-scale war.
In the latest incident reported by Russian media, separatists in South Ossetia claimed to have repulsed Georgian special forces who tried to cut off the regional capital from nearby villages. A Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman denied the reports, saying South Ossetian separatists had opened fire on two Georgian-controlled villages, and that Georgian forces had returned fire.
