The European Commission has also condemned the coup, saying it endangered the democratic advances made in the country in recent years. Mauritanian troops took control of the presidential palace after Abdallahi tried to sack senior army officers accused of helping destabilise the country. The government was thrown into a crisis this week after most members of parliament belonging to Abdallahi's party walked out en masse, in a move likely supported by senior military officials. The German government has called for a quick resolution to the situation.
