07.08.2008 - Georgia and South Ossetia rebels agree talks

There are unconfirmed reports that a ceasefire between Georgia and its breakaway province of South Ossetia has been violated, only hours after coming into effect.

Russia's Interfax news agency says rocket fire has struck the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali. The two sides agreed to a ceasefire on Thursday after a week of mounting clashes, and are to meet for Russian mediated talks on Friday. In a televised address, Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili suggested that Russia could guarantee South Ossetia's autonomy, if the province agreed to remain part of Georgia. South Ossetia broke from Georgian control during a war in the early 1990s.
