There are growing fears of an all-out war between Russia and the former Soviet republic of Georgia.
Fighting that broke out in the Georgian break-away region of South Ossetia is continuing to escalate. There are now reports that Russian warplanes have bombed the Georgian port city of Poti and a military base near the capital, Tbilisi. UN report says Russia shot down Georgian spy plane ... Mikhail Saakashvili has announced plans to impose martial law. Heavy fighting broke out on Friday when Georgian troops moved to try to take control of the South Ossetian capital, Tskhinvali. The European Union, the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe and the United States are planning to send a joint delegation to the region to seek an immediate ceasefire.
