Alina Dumitru destroyed Yanet Bermoy of Cuba in the final of judo's -48kg category, winning with ippon after only 80 seconds to win gold.

Dumitru had caused a huge upset in the semi-final when she beat Japan's Ryoko Tani, who was aiming to win a record third successive Olympic title.

Tani did claim a record fifth Olympic medal by taking a bronze as she beat Russia's Liudmila Bogdanova.

Argentina's Paula Paretto beat North Korea's Pak Ok Song to also win bronze.

Dumitru, who is the European champion, dominated the final against Bermoy.

She threw Bermopy to earn waza-ari with a leg-grab before finishing her off with a text-book osoto-gari for the maximum ippon score.

Tani had not been beaten in a major international competition since 1996.
