The African Union says it will suspend Mauritania from the bloc until democracy is restored in the West African nation.
The announcement comes after soldiers overthrew Mauritania's president in a widely condemned coup earlier this week. Soldiers led by the presidential guard overthrew Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi on Wednesday after he tried to sack senior officers. He was the country's first democratically elected president since independence in 1974.
