The United Nations Security Countil is scheduled to hold an informal meeting in a fresh bid to agree on a ceasefire between Russia and Georgia.
Two earlier emergency sessions failed to agree on the wording of a joint statement on the crisis in Georgia's breakaway regions. The flurry of UN diplomatic activity comes as Russia stepped up its military onslaught against Georgia's bid to wrest control of South Ossetia from Moscow-backed separatists. Meanwhile a joint EU, NATO and US delegation is expected to arrive in Georgia in a bid to broker a peace deal between the warring factions.
