France, holder of the rotating EU presidency, has proposed a three-step plan aimed at ending the hostilities in the breakaway Georgian region of South Ossetia.
The French plan calls for an immediate cease-fire and the return of Russian and Georgian troops to their former positions. It also demands that Georgia's sovereignty and borders be respected. French officials also said that EU foreign ministers would be meeting in Paris early next week to discuss the crisis in South Ossetia, with the possible option of calling an emergency summit Georgia and South Ossetia rebels agree ceasefire ...

UN report says Russia shot down Georgian spy plane ... of the 27-member bloc. The crisis escalated after Russia deployed further troops to support separatists in South Ossetia against advancing Georgian forces. Georgia subsequently declared a "state of war". On Saturday, Russian fighter jets bombed Georgian positions and the town of Gori. Russian officials claim that some 2,000 people have died since hostilities started two days ago.
