The United Nations Security Countil has held a third emergency session in response to the fighting between Russia and Georgia without agreeing on the wording of a joint statement on the crisis. Russian UN ambassador Vitali Churkin told a press conference in New York that only a complete withdrawal of Georgian troops from South Ossetia could stop the violence.
He went on to accuse Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili of military adventurism and attempting genocide. Britain says the European Union and the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe are sending a joint delegation to the region to seek an immediate ceasefire.
