Merkel reportedly made the statements in a telephone call to French President Nicolas Sarkozy, the current holder of the EU presidency. Merkel and Sarkozy agreed to stay in close consultation over the Georgian crisis. Earlier, Paris announced that French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner would travel to Tbilisi and Moscow in a bid to get the two sides to agree to a ceasefire. The mediation efforts come ahead of an emergency meeting of EU foreign ministers. The ministers are scheduled to convene in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss the bloc's response to the conflict in Georgia.
