The United States has used an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council in New York to warn Russia over the crisis in Georgia.
The US ambassador to the UN, Zalmay Khalilzad warned that relations with Russia could suffer if Moscow refused to contribute to a peaceful solution. Elsewhere German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire" in Georgia. She also urged the withdrawal of all military forces "to their positions before the outbreak of hostilities" and said Russian air attacks on Georgian territory must be stopped "without delay". Georgia condemns Russian actions ... this week as part of efforts to end the conflict. Paris announced earlier that French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner was flying to Tbilisi on Sunday for talks with Georgia's leaders and was due to fly on to Moscow on Monday. France currently holds the rotating EU presidency.
