Georgia and Russia have agreed to a modified peace plan brokered by French President Nicolas Sarkozy ending six days of fighting. Earlier Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and French President Sarkozy agreed on principles aimed at finding a peaceful solution to five days of conflict in the Caucasus.
This included a ceasefire, a pledge to renounce force, free passage for humanitarian aid and the withdrawal of troops to their bases. Speaking a joint press conference in the Georgian capital Tblisi, Saakashvili said there were still some sticking points remain, including Russian peacekeepers in Georgia's breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Meanwhile in Brussels, NATO renewed its pledge to accept Georgia as a full member of the western military alliance.
