The court turned down the couple's appellate review, in which they questioned the submitted evidence and demanded new proceedings, as unsubstantiated in July. Knoetig said the lower-level courts had collected sufficient pieces of evidence to issue the verdict and they had justified it properly. The couple have a chance to turn to the Constitutional Court, which, however, only rarely meets complaints in penal cases. According to the charges, the married couple murdered Natoli, 64, in his flat in Prague in January 2006.

He easily established contact with middle-aged women for whom he bought small gifts and treated them in a gentleman-like way in cafes. He allegedly promised Monika Chovancova to help her find a job at the Italian embassy in Prague. After Natoli's murder, the married couple disappeared from Prague and earned their living, for instance, working with a circus. They were detained in Havlickuv Brod, east Bohemia, in June 2006 by a regular police patrol.
