The first American military aircraft carrying humanitarian supplies from the United States have arrived in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.
US President George W. Bush ordered delivery of relief aid after a preliminary ceasefire ended fighting between Georgian and Russian troops. Georgia claims that Russian forces continue to hold a number of towns throughout the country, a charge that Moscow denies. However, German and French television crews have filmed Russian tank convoys only 70 kilometers from the Georgian capital. The US president has urged the Kremlin to withdraw from Georgia or risk harming international ties.
