Journalists near the city of Gori have reported hearing sustained artillery fire over the past few hours. This comes despite claims by Russian officials that their troops had begun pulling out of the town. At the same time, though, Russian military officers have invited Georgian police back into the city to help restore law and order. Elsewhere, eye-witnesses in the Black Sea coastal city of Poti say that Russian tanks have entered the port.
