Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has ramped up diplomatic tensions by telling reporters at the Kremlin that the world could forget about any talk of maintaining Georgia's territorial integrity.
Earlier, President Dmitry Medvedev met in Moscow with the leaders of the break-away regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Following those talks, both regional leaders said they felt confident that they would achieve independence from Georgia. US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has responded by warning that Russia's military actions in Georgia will have an impact on bilateral ties. Meanwhile, Georgia's parliament has voted unanimously to withdraw from the Commonwealth of Independent States. That's a regional bloc that was created following the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991.
