From Nigeria there are reports that two German construction workers who were kidnapped last month have been freed. In an email sent to news agencies, purportedly from Nigeria's biggest rebel group, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), says that its fighters had rescued the Germans from the hideout of another group which staged the kidnapping.
Neither Nigerian officials nor the German embassy have confirmed any release. The two expatriate staff of Julius Berger PLC, a subsidiary of the German concern Bilfinger Berger, were seized last month at Emohua in the oil-rich Niger Delta by unidentified gunmen. Until the kidnapping, the firm had rebuilding the main east-west road across the Niger Delta.
