Rice held talks on Thursday with French President Nicolas Sarkozy about the peace deal, which Sarkozy and his Russian counterpart Dmitri Medvedev reached in Moscow on Tuesday. Rice's trip comes following remarks by US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, who ruled out US military intervention in the stand-off between Russia and Georgia over the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Gates called on Russia to step back from what he called its "aggressive posture". Georgia has reported more Russian troop movements within its borders and has accused Moscow of sabotaging military targets prior to an agreed withdrawal.
