Senior Polish and US officials on Thursday signed a preliminary agreement to let the US place 10 interceptor missiles on the Baltic coast in exchange for a promise by Washington to boost Poland's own air defences. Washington says the system is intended to protect itself and Europe against missile attacks from "rogue states". At a press conference in Moscow, the deputy chief of staff, General Anatoly Nogovistyn, said the plans for a missile base in Poland could not go "unpunished". He said that the decision came at an already difficult time, and that it could only aggravate the situation in relations between the US and Russia.
