Zimbabwean Kirsty Coventry and Britain's Rebecca Adlington both won golds in world record times in the women's 200-meter backstroke and 800-meter freestyle respectively. Cesar Cielo took a first-ever swimming gold medal for Brazil, winning the men's 50-meter freestyle. In other Olympic news, Germany won the silver and bronze medals in the men's 25-meter rapid fire pistol competition. Gold went to Oleksandr Petriv of Ukraine. And in Olympic rowing, Romania took gold in the women's pairs, with silver going to China and bronze to Belarus. In the men's pair's, Australia won gold, Canada took silver, for its first medal of these games, while bronze went to New Zealand.
