16.08.2008 - Russian troops dig in in Georgia

Despite a French-brokered ceasefire in the Caucasus, Russian troops are digging in close to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi.

Although fighting has halted, Russian forces show no sign of pulling out more than a week after invading Georgia. According to eyewitnesses in the western Georgian town of Poti, Russian troops have also carried off equipment from the town's port and airport. Russia, however, has Russian Foreign Minister says Georgia can "forget territorial integrity" ...

denied reports that it has blown up a key railroad bridge west of the capital. The United States and Germany have called Russia's invasion "an excessive use of force" and have demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from Georgian territory.
