16.08.2008 - Siemens offices searched in Argentina

Argentine authorities have raided the Buenos Aires offices of German technology giant Siemens, in an investigation into bribery allegations.  Siemens is alleged to have made a direct payment of 16 million dollars to former Argentine President, Carlos Menem, during his decade long government which ended in 1999.

The Munich-based company reportedly expected to pay 100 million dollars in bribes to Argentine officials. German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported that Siemens was seeking a 1.26-billion-dollar contract to digitalize Argentine identity documents and other services. The contract was signed under Menem in 1998 but cancelled in 2001 by his successor, president Fernando de la Rua.
