19.08.2008 - Crisis NATO meeting on Georgia

In Brussels an emergency meeting of NATO foreign ministers has begun with calls to Russia to withdraw its troops from Georgia as part of last week's French-brokered peace deal.

ceasefire. He warned against any break in dialogue with Moscow. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said Russia must live up to commitments made by its President Dmitry Medvedev. Miliband added that he did not believe in isolating Russia. This follows a US suggestion that NATO consider suspending meetings of the NATO-Russian Council, founded in 2002. Diplomats in Brussels say some of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation's 27 members, noteably ex-communist states, back the US stance, while others are mindful of Russia's role as an energy supplier to western Europe.
