Malaysia's opposition has claimed a landslide victory for its leader, Anwar Ibrahim, in a special election in the key Malaysian state of Penang.
Anwar's People's Justice Party said he is expected to win at least 70 percent of Tuesday's vote for a seat in Parliament. The election is being seen as a test of Anwar's reputation and credibility after he was charged with sodomy. Anwar has rejected the charges as a smear campaign. His victory is the next step in his effort to topple Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi by mid- September. He has pledged to rid the country of race-based politics and revive its ailing economy if voted into office.
