Stefka was originally to be Czech ambassador to Uzbekistan, but did not get the post. According to unofficial information, the government recommended to President Vaclav Klaus in May not to appoint Stefka to the diplomatic post.
The Foreign Ministry indicated it was because Stefka was mentioned in connection with several controversial cases. Stefka was allegedly involved in bribe-taking or creation of slush funds at the general staff. The daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) wrote earlier this year that some 17.5 million crowns were unlawfully spent on parties, expensive gifts, luxurious underwear for officers and generals, and expensive vacations at the general staff in 2003-07 when Stefka was chief of staff. Czech Ministry demand compensation form general - press ... concluded that Stefka unlawfully received more than 33,500 crowns in housing benefits. The military police checked whether Stefka had committed a crime. ($1=16.797 crowns)
