US emergency officials warned that Gustav could be accompanied by an up to 30-foot storm surge along the Gulf Coast, and said four states in its potential path were expected to begin large-scale evacuations on Saturday. Hurricane Katrina was a Category 5 in the Gulf of Mexico before coming ashore near New Orleans as a Category 3 in 2005.
