German Defence Minister Franz Josef Jung has been making an unannounced visit to the Bundeswehr base in the northern Afghanistan town of Kunduz.
The minister has met with the provincial governor, Muhammad Omar, as well as Bundeswehr soldiers serving in the region as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. The visit comes just days after three Afghan civilians were shot dead, allegedly by Bundeswehr troops manning a checkpoint, and a separate incident in which one German soldier was killed in an insurgent attack on a convoy. The number of attacks on ISAF troops in the region has risen sharply in recent months.
