The US government has taken control of failing mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in an effort to protect markets across the globe.
The two companies account for nearly half of the outstanding mortgages in the US and have lost billions of dollars in the housing market crash. Business analysts say that banks around the world are highly exposed to the two companies and that the failure of either of them would cause global financial turmoil.
