Senior members of Germany's Social Democrats have been holding talks in Berlin aimed at plotting the way forward following the resignation of Kurt Beck as chairman on Sunday.

Beck quit just hours after Steinmeier was selected to lead the party into next year's federal election as the SPD's candidate for chancellor. In addition to being foreign minister, Steinmeier is also deputy chancellor in the grand coalition government.
