08.09.2008 - Two rebel MPs ponder leaving ODS group if Tluchor remains at head

In reaction to him, Tluchor said the departure of the two would be unpleasant, but he would not allow himself to be extorted.

Raninec told CTK that he need not support the cabinet in the possible upcoming vote of confidence in parliament if Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek (ODS chairman) and the government failed to deal with the surfacing scandal.

In its recent programme Nova TV said Morava had Czech deputy Morava faces criminal complaint ...

tried to gather sensitive information about politicians from the ODS and other parties in order to make them vulnerable to extortion.

Raninec today said the programme evidently showed that Tluchor had known about Morava's activities.

"That is why I will propose at the ODS deputies' group meeting on Tuesday morning that he [Tluchor] be sacked as the group chairman.

If he were not or if he did not step down, I'd consider my remaining in the group," Raninec said.

He said he had discussed his view with Schwippel, who shares it.

Tluchor said in a radio programme today that he would not allow himself to be extorted. He is considering proposing that the ODS group of deputies' either took a vote of confidence in the group leadership or elected a new chairman.

Raninec and Schwippel, along Vlastimil Tlusty, are rebels among the ODS deputies who openly criticise the ODS leadership.

According to TV Nova, Morava tried to spread sensitive photographs featuring Tlusty, but it was Tlusty who had intentionally staged the photographs along with journalists and played the role of a provocateur.

TV Nova reporters with a hidden camera recorded Morava at a meeting with fictitious detectives who offered Tlusty's snaps to him. Morava informed Tluchor about the offer, according to TV Nova.

Tluchor told reporters today that neither he nor anyone else from the ODS leadership had known about the affair.

He admitted, nevertheless, that about half a year ago he had received an SMS from Morava, who offered him photographs discrediting Tlusty. He said he had not nodded to the offer but had recommended that Morava seek the seller's contact address so that he knows who the seller was.

Morava gave up his mandate of a lower house deputy today.

Raninec today said he felt indignant at Morava, with whom he shared an office and who was his neighbour in the Chamber of Deputies for many months, tried to gather materials to discredit him.

"I consider this absolutely unacceptable, like the whole [TV Nova's] information," Raninec said.

He said it is also serious that Morava in TV Nova's programme speaks about leaks of information from secret services.

Apart from Raninec and Schwippel, the government need not win confidence of other coalition deputies, such as Tlusty and Olga Zubova, a deputy for the junior governing Greens, whom Morava also reportedly planned to extort.

Zubova has called on the prime minister to provoke a vote of confidence in his government by himself.

If the four dissatisfied coalition deputies were joined by Vera Jakubkova, another rebel among the Greens, the opposition, also including the Communists (KSCM), might be strong enough to topple the government.

Jakubkova today said he would like the Greens to convoke a coalition meeting to discuss Morava's scandal. She emphasised, nevertheless, that she would not vote against the government in a possible vote of confidence.

The three-party government, with 100 deputies in the 200-seat Chamber, has been kept afloat by two to four independent deputies who were elected for the CSSD but later left its group of deputies.
