Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili says any ceasefire settlement with Russia must respect Georgia's territorial integrity.
He made the statement at a joint press conference with French President Nicolas Sarkozy in Tblisi. Sarkozy travelled to Georgia to present Saakashvili with the key points of a memorandum agreed in Moscow on Monday between Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and an EU delegation headed by the French president. The deal envisages the withdrawal of Russian troops from Georgia's heartland within a month but excludes the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Following last month's brief war with Georgia, Russia recognised the two regions as independent states. Medvedev said that decision would not be rescinded despite Georgian and international protest.
