The US National Hurricane Center says that Hurricane Ike has weakened to a Category 1 storm over Cuba.
All 14 Cuban provinces were on maximum alert as the storm traversed the southern end of the Caribbean island and up to one million people were evacuated. The storm's center is expected to continue along the coast Monday night and over western Cuba the next day and enter the Gulf of Mexico by Tuesday night. A hurricane warning for the Florida Keys has been discontinued. Before hitting Cuba, Ike left over 60 people dead in Haiti, where a series of vicious storms has triggered a humanitarian crisis.
