Angola's state news agency Angop says the opposition party UNITA has acknowledged defeat in last week's parliamentary election.
With over three quarters of the vote counted from the two-day poll, the ruling MPLA of President Jose Eduardo dos Santos was winning about 82 percent of the vote compared to just over 10 percent for UNITA. The former rebel movement had tried to contest the vote because of its chaotic start in some areas of Luanda but the electoral commission rejected its claim. It was the country's first vote in over 16 years.
