09.09.2008 - Share of Czech university graduates slightly grows - OECD

While the OECD average is 27 percent, only 14 percent of Czechs have university education, says the report whose Czech version was published by representatives of the Czech Education Ministry and the Institute for Information on Education (UIV).

The share of university graduates grew also last year when it reached 13 percent, which was exactly one-half Czech Foreign Minister to receive his Kosovo counterpart ...

of the OECD average.

However, good results were registered in connection with secondary school education in the Czech Republic because the number of secondary school leavers in the Czech Republic exceeds the OECD average.

According to Michaela Klenhova from the UIV, what is important is whether educated people can use their education at work.

"Even if the number of people with tertiary education increases in the future they will have qualified jobs guaranteed," she said.

The Czech Republic is also lagging behind the OECD in spending per pupil on all educational levels.

While the OECD countries spend on average 6.4 percent of their GDP on education, the Czech Republic only spends 4.6 percent.

While the OECD countries earmark some USD6000 on average in proportion to purchasing power, it is only USD2800 in the Czech Republic.

The difference is smaller on the secondary school education level.

The OECD countries spend some USD7000 per student and the Czech Republic spends USD4800.

While the average spending per university student is almost USD16,000 in the OECD countries, it is USD6000 per student in the Czech Republic.
