The United States plans to withdraw 8000 troops from Iraq by next February while expanding its military presence in Afghanistan. Speaking at an address in Washington, President George W.
Bush said the troop redeployments were possible due to a sharp drop in violence in Iraq this year. Just under 140,000 troops will be left in Iraq where Bush said Iraqi forces were becoming increasingly capable of providing for the country's security. The reshuffle will see around 4,500 extra troops depolyed to Afghanistan.
